Our Spain Move: The Visa Situation
We had our sights set on the Digital Nomad Visa. It looked ideal for our remote software business—until Spain changed the rules. As of December 2024, you now need a degree or three years of experience in your field to qualify. We have experience (13+ years, in Callum’s case), but our business is only two years old—so it’s a no-go for now.
So, what’s the plan?
In 2025, we’re making the most of the Schengen 90/180 rule—staying in Spain for 90 days at a time, then heading out for 90 days. Not perfect, but perfect for this year of adventure.
Why 2025 Is All About Freedom
We’re not settling down just yet. In fact, we don’t even officially move to Spain until mid-May 2025. The first year of this journey is about freedom. We’ve:
- Sold everything in the UK
- Cleared all debts
- Ditched the mortgage
- Bought our off-grid Spanish base
From there, we’re hitting the road in our motorhome (Dave!), visiting loved ones, and even heading back to Jamaica for our 10-year wedding anniversary—where we originally tied the knot!
We’ll still be in Spain regularly, working on the farmhouse, restoring our land, and soaking up the Andalusian sunshine—but always with flexibility.
How We Fund This Life: Our Software Business
A lot of you ask how we afford this lifestyle. The short answer: tech + freedom.
Two years ago, we launched our remote software automation company. We help businesses around the world streamline systems and build custom tools. Everything we do is online—thank you, Starlink—so whether we’re in Spain, Jamaica, or parked in a field somewhere, we can work.
No office. No commute. No 9–5. Just us, our laptops, and some decent Wi-Fi.
What’s Coming in 2026?
We’re always planning ahead. By the end of 2025, we’ll be eligible to apply for the Digital Nomad Visa—but we’re also eyeing Spain’s Job Seeker Visa. This newer option allows non-EU citizens to stay for 12 months while looking for a job or starting a business. That could be a great route for us to open a Spanish branch of our company in the future. We’ll be watching this space closely after May 2025.
