Off-Grid Air Conditioning in Spain — We're Finally Cool! Plus Our Big Land Clear-Up

Can you really run air conditioning off-grid in Spain? We finally did it! Three aircon units installed and powered by solar, plus a major land clear-up on our Spanish homestead. Here's how it all went down.

Off-Grid Air Conditioning in Spain — We're Finally Cool! Plus Our Big Land Clear-Up

Hola, amigos! I’m Jem from the McGlynn family, and this week was a big one on our off-grid Spanish homestead. Two massive projects, a whole lot of sweat, and — finally — the comfort upgrade we’ve been dreaming about since we arrived in Andalusia. We installed air conditioning off-grid, powered entirely by our solar system. And when we weren’t celebrating that win, we were out clearing land in the early morning heat before the sun made it impossible to breathe.

If you’ve ever wondered whether off-grid air conditioning in Spain is actually possible, this one’s for you.

The Number One Comfort Upgrade: Off-Grid Air Conditioning

Let’s be honest — passive cooling in a Spanish farmhouse in 38°C heat doesn’t really cut it. We tried. It probably made things hotter, if I’m being completely honest with you. So when the chance came to install proper air conditioning units on our off-grid homestead, we grabbed it.

We’ve had three energy-efficient aircon units installed across the house:

  • One in the living room (above our wedding photos — priorities!)
  • One in our bedroom — the bigger, more powerful unit that should cool the living room and the kitchen
  • One in the kids’ bedroom, which gets the full force of the afternoon sun right into the evening

The installer came out, confirmed it was all doable, and we were off. Well — nearly. Day one ended with everything on the walls but nothing connected. One more sweaty night first. But by day two? Done. Three aircon units installed and ready to run off-grid.

How We Power Air Conditioning Without Mains Electricity

This is the question everyone asks: can you really run aircon off-grid? Here’s how our system works.

During the day, when our solar panels are generating well and the batteries hit 100%, any extra power would simply go to waste. So instead of wasting it, we run the aircon units. The electricity is going somewhere useful rather than nowhere at all. It’s one of the smartest things we’ve figured out on this journey — run heavy appliances when the batteries are full.

We also charge our portable Bluetti battery boxes during the day — we have three of them. In the evenings, when the sun drops and the panels stop generating, we plug the aircon into the portable units. It gives us roughly three to four hours of overnight cooling — not perfect, but it has honestly been a lifesaver for sleeping.

The plan going forward (more on this in a future episode) is to expand our battery storage so we can run the units longer into the night. But even with what we have now, solar-powered air conditioning off-grid in Spain is 100% achievable — and it has completely changed how liveable our home feels.

Clearing the Patio: Making Space for Garden Sheds

With the aircon sorted, we turned our attention to a long-overdue project: clearing the overgrown patio area outside the house.

We needed to get this done because — and I’ll be upfront about this — we are mini hoarders. We moved from a big three-bedroom house in the UK and downsizing was hard, especially for the kids who couldn’t bear to leave their toys and games behind. The result? The garage is overflowing. The house is overflowing. There’s still stuff under the trees that hasn’t been unpacked since we arrived.

The plan is to build a concrete base and install two garden storage sheds in the cleared area. That frees up the garage for actual use, and gives the kids somewhere for their things. It’s not glamorous, but it’s exactly the kind of practical progress that makes everything else possible.

Family Teamwork in the Early Morning Heat

The secret to land clearing in the Spanish summer is timing. The moment that sun comes around, you’re done. So we got up early — Callum, me, and Hayden — and cracked on before the heat hit. We had maybe a couple of hours of useful window, and we made the most of it.

We also found a few surprises along the way. The land had been so overgrown for so long that there was rubbish hidden underneath we hadn’t even known about, plus a very old farm find from the outhouse that we couldn’t wait to show you. And a beautiful butterfly, because Spain. ☀️

Fire Prevention: Why Clearing Dead Weeds Matters

This isn’t just about tidying up or making space for sheds. Clearing dead vegetation around your property in Spain is genuinely important for safety. We’ve had fires near us, and keeping dead, dry weeds away from the house is something we take seriously. Those spiteful weeds that leave splinters everywhere — gone. It’s hot, scratchy work, but it’s fire prevention, and that matters.

Shed Plans, Stone Lines & What’s Coming Next

Jemma (that’s me!) wants to finish the cleared area with weed control fabric and stones — Callum would rather go with fake grass, but let’s be real, my vision usually wins. We’re also marking out stone parking lines in the area so we know where to put the car and where the sheds will go. Little details, but they make the space feel intentional.

And speaking of what’s next — next week marks 9 months since we got the keys to Casita. We’re doing a full look back at everything that’s changed. I cannot wait to show you the transformation. This place was abandoned. And now? It’s home.
